Flowers Anyone??

I've been thinking about what guys do to win a girl's heart... so I decided to go to the knowledgeable experts. We can keep this theoretical... doesn't have to be personal answers.

What kind of gifts from a hero (in a book) make your heart go "sigh...."? Is it the traditional red roses?... a new tire for her clunker car?... a shelf he built for her bedroom?... the cashmere scarf she has coveted but would never buy for herself?... her favorite chocolates?

It's hard sometimes not to be "cliche" in a story. So help me out here! Share some ideas that you think would make super romantic gifts from a man to his woman...

Reality...

A friend of mine, Jaci Burton, has a book coming out in December about demons, survival experts and a reality show. ~sounds cool, doesn't it? Finally, a new idea in reality shows. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

But when I was checking it out on her site, I got to thinking about allllll the reality insanity that has struck TV. (Jaci also redid her website and it looks awesome. Sweetie, I'm so jealous. Gimme.)

But on to today's blog. Reality shows...

There was a reality type contest in the RT mag for authors.

There are reality shows on for clothing designers, self help, models, nannies, and insane people. By insane... I mean... agreeing to be locked into a house/sent off to an island/sent on a crazy race, etc etc etc... along with a whole bunch of people they don't know, competing for a prize. Sometimes the prize might be worth it... a cool million? Yeah, I'd go live on a deserted island for that.

But I would NOT eat cow brains for it. Nor would I eat horse innards for a mere $25,000. I would use up the bulk of it in therapy after eating that so why bother?

Then there are the contests where you open yourself of for scathing insults and humiliation in hopes of obtaining a record deal. I do have to wonder... the good ones, hey they have a shot and they probably know it, so if they can stomach some of the judges, go for it. But some of them can't sing their way out of a wet paper bag-the try outs are frightening. Do that think they have a shot or are they just wanting to do it just to do it? It's a puzzle for sure.

Is it just me or is anybody else tired of the reality show madness? If we're gonna keep seeing them, I wanna see something new. I don't want to see tomorrow's next great chef. Chances are he's going to end up a resturant I can't afford, or on a cooking show, or both, and I can't cook and watch tv at the same time, nor would I mess with looking up the recipe and trying later. Too lazy and mine wouldn't turn out like that anyway. I don't want to see some SUPERNANNY rescue a family in distress, terrorized by their kids, and as interesting as 30 Days can be, I don't want that.

Gimme a new reality idea. Come on... a good one. I'll either pick my favorite or toss the names in a hat and draw a winner.

Open until I remember to draw the name, probably a few days!

This n' That

I'm brain-dead. It must be the Sudafed and Coffee. I've been trying to think what to blog all morning. It shouldn't be that difficult. Maybe I'm trying too hard.

I could talk about the rising cost of gas---ugh! Way too depressing. Texas hasn't been as bad some areas. I saw on the news it was getting worse.

My yard is cracking because it's so dry here. We really need rain. The weatherman said that we had a thirty percent chance of rain over the next few days. Why doesn't he tell it like it really is. We have a seventy percent chance it won't rain.

I figured out the difference between Atlanta, Ga and Texas while I was at the RWA conference. Atlanta was like walking into a sauna and Texas is like walking into an oven.

I'm so ready for fall.

I'm less than 100 pages having my current book finished. Woo-hoo. Hey, I can't stay depressed for long--summer cold or not. And Rosemary Laurey, Dianne Castell and I are counting down the days until Texas Bad Boys hits the shelves. It's already available for pre-order. I always get excited when I have a new book coming out. Keep watching for a fun new contest.

Okay, back to the grindstone :)
Hugs,
Karen Kelley

A little bit naughty…a little bit wild?

We all have jobs, families and more responsibility than we want. We’re solid and totally responsible doing what we’re supposed to be doing day after day, our haloes glowing, our pastors and parents proud.
But…and there’s always a but…all of us have another side, that wild and maybe a bit naughty side that from time to time just kind of sneaks out. Maybe it takes a chocolate margarita or two or maybe we’re just fed up with being Ms. Goody-two-shoes and gotta do something else or bust. Just once...or more than once...every woman needs to be that wild child or sexpot or complete flirt that would embarrass the heck out of her family if they ever knew.
So, the trick is, not to let them find out! See, you thought I was this sedate suburban housewife. And I am...most of the time...except when I decided I really wanted to go to the strip clubs and see what all the excitement’s about.
I left my ID at home along with all credit cards and anything that connected me to my other self.(If I got thrown in the slammer I’d rot in the slammer) I hooked up with one of my more adventuresome friends (no, it wasn’t LuAnn) and hit the strip clubs. I dance, I flirted, I smoked and drank and stuffed money in waistbands and other places. Holy crap! And strutted my stuff. I did all the things I never do and knew what happened in Newport stayed in Newport, that was the agreement!
So have you? Did you? Are you going to??? If you are let me know…I wanna come! I bet LuAnn will come with us!

Puppy Love

Here’s our new puppy, Bessie, looking adorable. We love her, our cats want her to die. LOL. She’s a bundle of energy (contributing factor to why the cats hate her), and besides eating and sleeping, she loves to drag towels out of the laundry basket and throw them around the family room. Keep in mind, a bath towel is about nine times her size, but size is no object when you’re stubborn and determined. She fits right into this family. ;-)

I’ve only written one dog into a book, and that was Amanda’s poodle, Baby, in Heiress For Hire. My real life cat Max appears as the disdainful Ferris in Mouth To Mouth. Do you like to see animals in romances? Or are they distracting? Have you read a book where the pet stole the show? Jenny Cruisie always has hilarious scenes with dogs involved, and Lori Foster had her adorable Chihuahuas in a couple of books (Riley is the one that comes to mind).

And actually, I just realized I wrote a whole crowd of animals into my second vampire book, Bit The Jackpot. Now that was fun to write… picture a vampire walking the dog for his girlfriend!

When we were looking for a puppy, reading all the stories online at Petfinder and various shelters both warmed my heart and broke it. Pets give such unconditional love and there are so many animals out there who need a home. Bessie was born in the shelter and taken by a rescue group to help place her more quickly with a family, and I can’t imagine how we ever lived without her. Tell me about your fur babies, I’d love to hear your stories.

Interview with Lacey Alexander

Lacey Alexander writes the uber steamy erotica with what she calls a "touch of romance." She's graciously agreed to answer a few questions from our Vamps & Scamps. Enjoy!

What inspired you to be a writer? Did you always want to write?

I’m not sure what inspired me, but the desire to write has always been inside me. I’ve written off and on my whole life – and the “off” times were mainly due to having been told by naysayers that I would never succeed. Now that I’ve found some measure of success, I can’t imagine I’ll ever stop writing again.

What is the best part of being a writer? The worst?

The best part: the flexibility. For instance, I’m wearing pajamas as I do this interview. The worst: the uncertainty. A writer never knows how her work will be perceived, if her next book will be bought, etc.

If one of your books was made into a movie or tv series, what book would you want it to be and who would you pick to play the hero and heroine?

This question made me laugh – because my books are so very much ABOUT sex that any movie made from them would be, um, of a strictly “adult” nature, if you know what I mean. Based on that, I, unfortunately, don’t really have an answer.

What is your favorite cartoon character?

Aladdin, from the Disney movie. I thought that for an animated guy he was hot ; )

What is the hardest part about writing?

Well, for me, writing is mostly a joy. I guess the hard part for me is the business aspect of being a writer. I don’t enjoy it and it takes time from what I love to do – which is telling stories.

Do you have any habits, good or bad, or weird or funny that you do when you write your books?

Not really. I always hear authors talk about listening to certain kinds of music or lighting candles or taping up scene and character pictures around their work area, but I don’t do any of that, I’m afraid. I just write ; )

Describe what your work area/desk looks like?

Standard brown desk with a laptop – which has never been in my lap ; ) I bought it for the flexibility, but I’m so used to writing at my desk that I’ve never moved it. And I’m surrounded by lots of books, and two big windows that let the sun in.

Is there a genre/them/series that you haven't written yet, that you'd like to try writing about? Can you tell us about it?

I would love to try my hand at historical erotica.

For your Hot in the City series, did you travel to each city to do research for the book?

Yes, as a matter of fact, I did. I loved being able to provide a level of detail I could not have otherwise. Of course, some of the places I mentioned in the books were imaginary, but many were quite real!

Who is your sexiest hero to date and why?

That’s a toughie, but I guess I’ll go with Jack Wade from FRENCH QUARTER. It’s that Cajun thing ; ) Plus he was such a “protector.”

As above but female?

Wow, another hard one, but I’ll say Diana from SIN CITY. From a personal standpoint, Diana was the hardest heroine for me to relate to, because she was SO very wild. But that’s what I like about her – that she had the capability to be a total wild child yet she was also mature, confident, dependable, and likable. Being wild came naturally to her and she was comfortable in her own skin.

Which of your works is your "fave" to date and why?

You know, I remain really fond of FRENCH QUARTER, even though it was my first. I wrote it without ever reading any other erotica – I had this idea of what I thought “romantic erotica” should be, this goal of taking the reader on the ultimate erotic journey – and I decided if it didn’t sell, then I wasn’t meant to write erotica. So I’m very pleased that my “vision” turned out to be one that worked for so many people.

That said, I’m also really excited about the upcoming release of VOYEUR from Penguin Books next May. While I see most of my books as “erotic fantasies,” with VOYEUR I feel I’ve taken a step closer to a story that could really happen in real life and I hope readers will relate to that and to the heroine, Laura, who is kind of an “everywoman” who just happens into an extremely erotic situation purely by happenstance.

Do you ever go to the RT Conventions?

No, afraid not. Just not really my scene … I keep a low profile.

But readers can learn more about me and my books by visiting http://www.laceyalexander.net/.

"Peachy" Time in Atlanta!

Well, I'm back home... yawn... The conference was a success by my calculations. I had a nice lunch with my agent on Wednesday. Then that evening at the booksigning, I met Jennifer Y.! I love putting names with faces. :)

Thursday morning Dianne, LuAnn, Karen and I gave our workshop on Group Loops, Blogs, and Ads. We were afraid no one would show up, but we had a roomful - about 40 to 45. The speaker for the RWA luncheon that day was Meg Cabot (Princess Diaries). Her speech was cute. That afternoon, Erin and I spent far too much money shopping at Lenox Square. She bought a really pretty dress.

Friday morning I met with my editor. Then went to lunch with a group of the Scamps and Vamps and the Bookjunkies. Please don't kill me if I leave someone out or misspell a name. Here goes - in no particular order... MaryF, Bad Barb, Lynda, Colleen (Lynda's sister), PattiF, Jamie, Stacy, LadyB, Mo, Jan, Heather, Anne-Marie, Elizabeth (LuAnn's mom) and authors Dianne Castell, Erin McCarthy, LuAnn McLane, Leigh Riker, and moi - Janice Maynard. I did take pictures, but the place where we ate was kind of dark, and the photos were not very flattering. Sigh...

Friday evening was the Penguin/NAL/Berkley party. LuAnn, Erin, and I attended that... rubbed shoulders with the wonderful Nora Roberts, among others.

Saturday morning was the NAL booksigning/book giveaway. The luncheon speaker that day was Christina Dodd. Then I went to the Spotlight on NAL which lasted until 4:15, and then I hit the road and headed north. Stayed with relatives in Chattanooga Saturday night and came home tonight. Haven't even unpacked yet... It was a fun conference. This was just my schedule... everybody there had her own agenda. Lots of stuff to do and sometimes it was hard to choose. It was wonderful to see so many of the Scamps and Vamps. Wish you all could have been there. I've "re-started" my Yahoo loops, so I'll be back online tomorrow. Good to be home.

Hugs from the Peach State,
Janice

Cliffhangers

I went and saw Pirates of the Caribbean 2 yesterday with my oldest daughter. Well, the youngest went, too. Although she only woke up to eat and she snoozed happily through Johnny Depp. I planned it that way, too. I love it when my plans work out.

However, I hate cliffhangers. And Pirates ended in a definite cliffhanger. More so than Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

I mean, I undertand it. It's a concept I've used in my Hunters books, giving a sneakpeak in the final chapter of who I will probably write about next. It's a good way to keep interest, right? I just hate it when others do it to me.

Like Stephanie Plum books, by Janet Evanovich. Seven Up was the worst, when Ranger walked into Stephanie's room that night and it ended right there.

SL Viehl does it all the time with her Stardoc books. I wanted to scream bloody murder at the end of Beyond Varallan. And with Rebel Ice.

Sometimes I wish I had psychic abilities so I could see inside the mind of the author and know what was coming next. Even if I knew, I'd still buy and devour the book ASAP. But the months, or in some cases, years of waiting for the next one sucks.

Can you think of any books or movies that ended up a cliffhanger that you ready to commit mayhem when you read that last sentence and realized it was the last sentence?

Karen Kelley Muses...

I'm off to Atlanta early Tuesday so Lucy Monroe graciously said she would post my blog. Except I can't think of anything to say---I know, if you've ever met me you wouldn't believe I couldn't find a thing to talk about.

I blogged a couple of days ago on my blog about my sister-in-law. That was kind of interesting, but I don't want to repeat it here. People continually surprise me, though.

I bought a smoothie maker and it worked three times before the motor burned up. By the time I pay postage to mail it in, then return postage to get it back, I could buy a brand new one. That sucks. I think I'll try taking it back to Khol's to see if they'll exchange it.

We have the estimate on our car---the new one that got scraped but we have to wait until corporate calls us. That sucks, too.

I guess this month has been good and bad. I did win the slot tournament, $5,000 in cash and a free trip to Atlantic City in November for a chance to win a million dollars. That was cool.

So, I guess I could find a few things to talk about. How's your month going? I promise I'll read the answers when I get home. Y'all have a fun week and don't forget LUCY'S BLOW OUT PARTY!!!!!

Ho, ho, ho...

Color me excited! I'm leaving first thing Tuesday morning for the national Romance Writers of America conference in Atlanta. I'll have a chance to meet and chat with at least three editors that I am working with or have worked with. My agent will be there. I'll be attending workshops and helping present one. I'll be part of the literacy signing where publishers donate the books and all proceeds go to support adult literacy efforts. There will be two great luncheons with speakers Meg Cabot (Princess Diaries) and Christina Dodd.

On Friday I'll have lunch with a bunch of the scamps and vamps and the bookjunkys. And I may even squeeze in a bit of shopping at one of my favorite shopping meccas - Lenox Square. And speaking of shopping - guess what? I told you that July 25th is a red-letter day. But do you know what else it is? It marks the "five months 'til Christmas" milestone! Bet you weren't thinking about that. :)

It just so happens that I have actually started my Christmas shopping. Not in a big way, but a few things here and there. Barnes and Noble has been having a big sale... tables of clearance books and also "gifty" kinds of items. I bought my girls a set of blue suede round nested boxes - really cool. They were half price - about $11 I think. For Anastasia I got a cute little china tea set - half price also - $7.50. For one son-in-law I got a heavy hardback book by Marvel that contains a whole bunch of Spiderman comics - regularly $50, I got it for $21.

Then I got a sale catalog from one of my favorite places - Levenger. Found really cool small clocks that show time zones around the world... regular $25-$35... got them for $9.95 each. They will go to my two brothers-in-law. Some other odds and ends I won't bore you with... stocking stuffers, etc. My hubby and I both come from fairly large families, and we all still exchange gifts, so I like to start early and hunt for bargains. Otherwise I would be broke!! What about you - any early shoppers out there?

I'll be thinking about all of you next week and wishing I could tuck you in my suitcase. Even for those of us who are lucky enough to have achieved our dream of becoming writers, it is always a huge, fun thing to see and talk to writers who have been our own faves for years. Imagine bumping into Nora Roberts enroute to the restroom! I know you're all going to have a blast with Lucy Monroe's "not going to RWA blog party". The prizes sound amazing. Try to be good while some of us are gone. No mutiny on the Loop, etc. :)

As soon as I get back I'll be blogging about all the "goings on" in Hot-lanta. Talk to you soon! Janice Maynard

Back from the beach...

We're back from vacation and I had a very relaxing week at the beach in Punta Cana. I absolutely love the Caribbean and could go every week. LOL. People in the Dominican Republic are very friendly and the landscape is an amazing mix of mountains, sugarcane fields, and shoreline beaches.

When I’m there, I spend a LOT of time laying on a lounge chair reading or people watching. Some general observations…

-Husbands should not be trusted to adequately put sunscreen on lily-white women. I saw several ladies with fingerprint-like burn streaks on their lower backs after they let the men wield the bottle. Yikes.

-Resort bartenders don’t understand “don’t make this one as strong as the last.”

-People dribble spit out of their mouths into the pool. Repeatedly.

-A volleyball comes out and so do true colors. Watch out for those mild mannered schoolteachers. They can spike hard, I’m telling you.

-Very few vacationers successfully learn the cha cha beachside given the drink in their hand and the directions being given in Spanish, though many will try.

-Adults shouldn’t ride donkeys in bathing suits.

But that’s why I love beach vacations- everyone is relaxed and having such a good time. The real world seems very far away and there is nowhere you have to be. What’s your favorite vacation spot? Or where would you like to go?

Where do you like romances you read to be set? Exotic locales? Big cities, small towns?

Erin, who is firmly back in the real world :-D

What won’t you read??

Everyone reads something different. Some people love vampires, some wouldn’t pick up a vamp book if it was the last book on earth. Some like to read humorous stores, others think the humor distracts from the plot and romance. Then there’s the erotica stories that are really hot…bad pun…right now but not for everyone just as the inspirational books are really big sellers but certainly not for everyone.
--Amazing that the two biggest selling romance lines now are erotica and inspirational. --
The same for movies…some love the dark scary stuff, others…like me…would rather have a root canal than watch a move like that. I have to sleep with the lights on for months. I won’t watch any movie where someone dies…unless it’s the bad guy.
I need humor, fun excitement, romance!
No fighting, dying, crashing, yelling, scaring, cutting off body parts.
No Jason, Freddie, Lord of the Rings, Autumn In New York for me.

I need Stephanie Plum, Pretty Woman, American President and, of course, Indiana Jones and Captain Jack Sparrow.

Soooo, the question is…
What kind of book will you not read??
What kind of movie will you not watch?

BTW...pretty cool that Texas Bad Boys is on the front cover of RT for September!

That first moment of attraction...

I'm starting a new book and new books are a lot like new relationships. They're so yummy. I am in love...or infatuated on my way to love and every minute spent exploring this new entity is delicious. The snags are inevitable and like any new relationship, there will be misunderstandings, moments of panic and sheer terror and opportunities to dive in, risks be darned or hold back for fear of going too far, or getting too involved.

I'll doubt the viability of the book more than once and go through a major crisis about half-way to the end, sure that there isn't enough story for a real book, or that the story isn't what I wanted it to be. Does that sound familiar? It's a little nerve wracking to realize how much writing is like falling in love and learning to be a couple.

And it doesn't always work. Sometimes books have to be abandoned (I've never done this, but know lots of authors that have), gutted (done it - hate it - it's like death...or divorce) or re-written multiple times to get the story right. Relationships are like that, aren't they? They don't just happen...you have to work to make them something worth sharing with each other and the rest of your world. The same is true for stories. I don't know a single author who thinks writing is easy. Fun? Yes. Amazing? Definitely. Wondrous even. But easy? Nope.

While I was growing up, my mom was fond of the saying, "Anything worth having is worth working for." That's true of a really good book or a truly great relationship. I think romance shows that relationships don't just happen, any more than the books that contain them.

When I was dating my husband, we had many defining moments in our relationship, but one stands out clearly. His family wasn't too happy with the thought of him having a serious girlfriend and they weren't above trying to undermine the relationship. One time, they guilted him into sticking around well past when he said he'd have to be finished helping his sister move so he could come to see me (we lived in different cities). I called him hours after he was supposed to at my apartment and he was finally home. He asked if I still wanted him to come. This was a make or break moment. If I'd said no, he would have let our relationship go, but he had a lot to learn about me and my tenacity.

Of course I wanted him to come. I had some yelling to do...mostly about how stupid he was to think that one screw up was going to end my feelings for him. But the thing is...I knew that relationships aren't without pain, it's what comes after that makes or breaks them. And we both learned something that night. I learned that tenacity was a good thing and he learned that forgiveness was not a Utopian ideal. We've been married 18 years and we are both so very much in love. That was a good night. :)

And when I hit that moment with this book that I want to throw my computer across the room, I'm going to remember that night...I'm going to remember that anything worth having is worth working ... and sacrificing ... for. I'm going to remember that new books don't just happen.

What about you? Can you remember a relationship defining moment? Or a time when you realized the job you love wasn't all sweetness and light but it was worth pursuing despite the pitfalls you'd encountered?

Looking forward to your responses!

Hugs,
Lucy

Unforgettable Lines & a Contest

I watched Ghostbusters last night. I haven't seen that movie in ages and I forgot how funny it was...

I remember how cool the special effects in the movie seemed when it first came out. Now they look sooooooo hmmm.. cheesy? The wonders of digital effects?

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I love a well written line, whether it's in a movie or a book, or whatever.

Some memorable lines...

You can't handle the truth! A Few Good Men

You had me at Hello. Jerry Maguire

(I'm so disturbed that two of my fave lines are from Tom Cruise movies)

Return of the King is one of my fave movies and it's full of liners I love, but this is my fave.

Gimli: I never thought I'd die fighting side by side with an elf.
Legolas: How about side by side with a friend?
Gimlin: Aye. I could do that.

Tombstone...another good one. I'll admit, I loved almost every line from Doc Holiday in this one. Kilmer just made that role.

Evidently Mr. Ringo's an educated man. Now I really hate him.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

There are soooo many good lines out there. Want to share some of your favorites?

* I got a pressie in the mail today...A big box of copies of Hunting the Hunter. And I wanna share... so everybody that participates in today's blog is going to be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a signed copy. Just comment, share some of your favorite lines before Monday morning and you're entered. I'll draw TWO winners on Monday.

Love/Hate

You know one thing that I really... really...really hate?

Going to the dentist. Now it's nothing personal against the dentist or the techs...just going there, having my teeth cleaned...I hate it.

I know there are plenty of others out there who feel the same way. There might be the odd creature that doesn't mind it or enjoys it. Enjoys it. *confusion*

On the flip side, hey, you only have to go every once in a while and if you take decent care of your teeth, it's not a big deal, right? Me, I have several cavities I have to have fixed, but since I haven't been in oh... eight years, easy, I shouldn't complain, right?

There are just so many more things I'd rather do. Cutting the grass would be better. Going to the OB/GYN... marginally better. So many things that are better.

Just out of sheer curiousity...what three things do you hate to do? What three things do you love to do?

Hate:

Dentist
Eye Doctor
Cleaning the toilets

Love:

Playing with my kids.
Taking pictures of said kids with their dad.
Writing.

And the really cool thing about the writing... *G* I get paid. Not everybody gets paid to do what they love. So I guess I shouldn't complain overmuch about a measly trip to the dentist. But I will...

An interview with Shiloh Walker

Well, here it is...an interview with our own Shiloh Walker.
Enjoy!

1) What's the most challenging part of writing for you: creating characters or coming up with an intriguing and complex plot?

Oh, the plotting… easy. I can create characters all day long, but the actual plotting part is hard for me. I generally am a ‘seat of the pants’ writer, but I’m learning that isn’t always the most time efficient way to write. Actually plotting it out before hand… hard work.

2) Do you ever see yourself writing a non-romance?

Oh yeah… I love sci fi and fantasy. Although I suspect anything I write will always have romantic undertones or romance elements, I have all sorts of ideas that aren’t strictly romance.

3) Would you/have you ever collaborated with another writer to tell a story?

Haven’t ever, but I would, depending on the other writer. A friend of mine, Mary Wine and I have tossed ideas around. Lora Leigh and I both mentioned it at one time, but she’d want to the tell the male POV if we ever did… and so I would. *G* so that won’t work.

4) What are you most proud of achieving in your career?

Just getting published for me is a big deal. What I’m the most proud of, though, has nothing to do with my career. Writing, while it can be a pain at times, is easy for me, mostly. The story usually comes easy enough, the characters come easy...doesn’t feel right have that much pride in something that comes easy. Now ask me about what I’m proud of in my life… *G* I’d say my kids.

5) If you could be any of your characters for just a day (or longer), who would you choose?

MY characters? None of them. Haven’t you seen some of the crap I do to my characters? I kill their husbands, I have them beaten, I give them guilty secrets to hide and agonize over… nope. I know what kind of things I do to my characters and I’m not into suffering.

6) Where do you see the Hunters series going?

Hunting the Hunter is going to be a big turn in the series. I’m looking to make the series deeper, more intense. I want to appeal to a wider range of readers, not just the lovers of erotic romance.

7) can you give any explaination for the following?
FIRSTLY PICTURE THE SCENE...YOUR BEING CHASED BY AN AlIEN / MADMAN / MURDERER...ETC, YOUR IN A BUILDING / CASTLE / ROOF...AND YOU HEAR THE FOLLOWING:
1)"don't look down"
2)"don't open the door"
3)"don't answer the phone"
and my "fave"
4)"don't look back"
Why when watching film / reading book / listening to the radio, etc...when hearing any one of the above
saying "DON'T"...that we automatically "DO"??

That’s easy… I can sum it up in two words. Human nature. It’s the same reason when mama told us not to touch the cookies yet cuz they were too hot, we still did it. Humans are generally just nosy by nature and when there’s something down, back, behind, above… we want to know. Even if it means it’s going to hurt to do it.

Thanks, Shi, for answering our questions.
Can't wait for more of the Hunter series and best of luck with your career.

Guilty Pleasures

In next week's issue of TV Guide there is an article about this summer's "guilty pleasures" to watch and it got me thinking about my own guilty pleasures.... the things that I know are bad for me or at the very least a big waste of time but I just can't help myself. Here is my list (at lease a few) of my personal guilty pleasures:

Potato Chips.... is there a more unhealthy food on the planet? And yet I purchase them and can't seen to consume a sandwich without a handful of greasy, salty chips.

People Magazine.... worthless gossip and eye candy but if I'm at the doctor's office People wins out over Time or Newsweek.

Falcon Beach.... a sudsy summer show on ABC Family that I just can't miss. I tell my family that it's for YA novel research but that's bunch of hooey. I like the show.

So make me feel better and tell me some of your guilty pleasures! Do you sneak a Hostess Cupcake into your lunch? Take an afternoon nap? Watch Lucky Louie on HBO? Come on....fess up ;-) Oh and don't say romance novels... no need to feel guilty about that particular pleasure!

On the radio recently they had a list of “Things women shouldn’t do after 30.” Some I thought were silly- who cares if a 35 year old wants to keep her cell phone in a Hello Kitty case? And others I don’t think a woman should be doing at any age- like getting into a fist fight with another woman over a guy (really, ladies, is he worth all that pulled hair??).

The ones I remember… Things A Woman Shouldn’t Do After 30:
- Shop in the Juniors Department because it still fits
- Wear pigtails (I guess Nicolette Sheridan hasn’t heard this one)
- Get into a fight with another woman (over a guy)
- Swear in front of children
- Keep cell phone in Hello Kitty case
- Have stuffed animals
- Pass out drunk in a restroom stall (I guess by 30 you should know to pass out after you get home)
- Have muffin tops from their low rise jeans
- Wear tongue ring or other facial piercings

So what do you all think? Agree? Disagree? Have any no-nos you’d like to add to the list? What fashion trends really get on your nerves? I think it could be funny for a future heroine to have to somehow confront a list like this, and decide to defy it just to make a point. Of course, that would be when she meets the hero...

My publisher, Kensington, was very generous last week, and I am swimming in ARCs (Advanced Reviewer Copies) for my October Brava, You Don’t Know Jack. I’ll choose a random winner to receive an ARC from those who comment. Thanks for your thoughts!

Happy Birthday, USA!

With apologies to our international friends... I decided to do today's blog about the 4th. :) Our little town always does a parade and fireworks on the Saturday closest to the holiday, no matter which day the 4th falls on. So... we have already been in celebration mode. Had a really fun parade Saturday morning... bigger than usual, 'cause this is election year, and bunches of politicians had floats, convertibles, etc.

Then in the afternoon, we cooked hamburgers on the grill... at 10PM Saturday night we sat in lawn chairs in our yard and watched the skies light up with sparkle and pizazz. We even let two-and-a-half-year-old Anastasia stay up and see the show. She was fascinated, and said, "I'm not scared". And only covered her ears for part of it. The fireworks were really beautiful.

Now, tomorrow will be low key... maybe we'll catch a movie. This weekend was the first time I had been out of the house for any length of time, so I am looking forward to doing something fun.

Today's blog has a bonus... I have an ARC of "A Very Merry Christmas" to give away. It is the Brava Christmas anthology with Lori Foster and Gemma Bruce. Just drop me a note about how you spend the 4th, and I'll put the names in a drawing. If you are not a resident of the USA, tell me if there are occasions in your country when fireworks are part of the celebration. I'll announce the winner tomorrow evening after eight!

P.S. I am going to try and include two pictures today... one of Anastasia "pretending" to sleep in the hammock and one from the parade.

Enjoy the day off tomorrow, and be safe!

Shameless Self-Interest :)

Okay...here's the deal. Many of you commented on my blog when we discussed the topic of author websites, what you liked, didn't like and wish you could find. (And THANK YOU for doing so!) One thing that came across fairly clearly to me was that my website is missing something *a lot* of readers like...the FAQs page. Now, I get asked questions all the time and I do plan to use the page to answer queries that frequently get asked via email and in person, but I'd also like to use it to answer some of the questions that readers hesitate to ask for any number of reasons.

So, here is your chance not only to help me make my FAQs page as reader friendly as possible, but for you to have a say on some of its content.

Post your questions here as a comment. I'll be away over the weekend, so can't reply to your comments. But when I get back on Wednesday, I'll take note of all your questions for my website and draw a name from commentors to win some cool prize...let's see, what should that be? How about an American Tourister black softside briefcase/carrybag with Secrets Volumes 6, 8 & 9 tucked inside?

Looking forward to your comments!

Hugs,
Lucy

Butterflies

So I'm suffering from a serious case of butterflies. My first paperback is due out on the shelves next week. *G* I've already gotten my thrill for the week~I saw it out the shelves at two places and both places had it displayed vvvverrrryyyy nicely.
Still, I have the butterflies. And I've been assured, sadly, that the butterflies don't ever really go away. Yuck. I've heard that from numerous people. Several friends have told me, usually in the same breath, Oh, yeah, I know what you mean. I get those same butterflies. Don't worry... it's gonna be fine...
Don't worry. These butterflies feel like they have steel wings tipped with razors and they are flying around my gut and I get to deal with them for the rest of my life???? But don't worry.
I might be able to manage it, though. See, I've come up with a plan. Move to a remote area with no internet access, no bookstores, no newspapers. I was thinking Antarctica but I don't like the cold so much.
So I've decided somewhere in Montana should work. Montana still has lots and lots of space, right?
If I can't get online, I won't be tempted to check my email compulsively every ten minutes waiting for that first email that says, oh man this book sucked! Big time. I won't check review sites hourly, waiting to read that review, even though I don't pay much attention to reviews any more. This book is different~I'm entitled to check, right? I won't keep checking the ranking on Amazon. But those rankings don't mean much, I'm told. So why do I keep fighting the urge to go look?
So some isolated, cut off place in Montana should work. There, I can take my laptop, sans internet access, and work on my current WIP(s) and worry about whether or not they suck. I mean, I only have about a year or so before one of them releases and the other one...a couple of months. I've got a lot of worrying to get to.

*Don't forget...check out my website for a chance to enter my Sizzlin' Summer Nights contest.

Job Myths

Yesterday a woman called me to ask about publishing . She had written a book. She only wanted to publish the one book, had no desire to make a career out of it. Someone at the license plate tax office had given her my phone number. I did the best I could, but she didn't write romance. Plus, she thought all she had to do was contact a publisher and wanted to know the name of mine. No, I didn't laugh. She was very sincere. I hope I enlightened her about the world of publishing as I know it.

That got me to thinking about jobs that I know nothing about. How many people roll their eyes when I ask a stupid question concerning their work?

My husband is a licensed paramedic. That's the highest level that you can go in his field. It starts with ECA, then EMT. EMT-Intermediate, Paramedic and last, licensed paramedic. To be licensed you need so many college hours. To recertify he needs 96 hours in 4 years. They run EKG's, give drugs, intubate, start IV's (as an EMT-I, I once started an IV going over railroad tracks and I nailed that sucker!).

Karl and I have been caught in a flash flood, been to shootings and hostage situations. He once had a gun pulled on him. We've gone to wrecks when there was a tornado spotted in the area and stood on the highway with lightning all around us as we tried to free someone from the tangled mass of metal. We've attempted to breathe life back into babies and held crying newborns in our arms. Karl has repelled over the side of a bridge into freezing water to get to a carload of GI's before they drowned.

The pay sucks. The hours suck. And invariably when you load someone into an ambulance a family member will ask if there will be someone riding in the back with their sick relative. Even though you want to tell them: No, ma'am, we're both going to be in the front. We just thought we'd turn the lights and sirens on and haul ass to the hospital. But instead, we just smile and say: Yes, ma'm. Someone will be with him all the time---because they don't know.

So, is there anything about your job that you want to vent about or inform us that other people get totally wrong? And since this is such a long post and if you've managed to get this far, I'll be giving away a book from my backlist and some Texas Bad Boys Goodies (Sept. release). Not the book but some promo stuff.

Immortal Love?

I have a July 1 deadline on my third vampire book and I’m cruising along, heading towards the end when I realized… I never actually thought of an ending. LOL. I assumed I’d figure that out when I got there, but I’m almost at the end and I’ve got nothing. Not a clue. Part of the challenge of a vampire book, and part of what makes them so romantic, is that someone has to give up their life as they know it to be with the other character. It’s the ultimate sacrifice. So help me out here… whether you read vampire books or not, do you think by the end of the story:

Hero and heroine should both be immortal (eternal love)?

Hero and heroine could both be mortal?

One could be mortal and one immortal?

Do you think a character who becomes immortal during the book should choose it, or be forced to via circumstances? (Like the heroine got shot by thugs so vampire hero turned her)

Take pity on my husband and help me out here… he says he’s worn out discussing vampire ethics with me, especially since they, um, don’t exist. :-D

Babies 'R Us?

Mornin' one and all - This blog comes to you from the road... I left home on Friday afternoon... hope to be home later tonight.

We had a fun but very busy weekend. Friday night - a rehearsal dinner... Saturday - lunch with our daughter and family and a peek at the house they just bought. Simple but nice and a lot bigger than where they have been! Then a wedding Saturday night.

On Sunday, we christened little Ainsley in Athens, TN. Family came down from Knoxville, TN, over from Pulaski, TN, and up from Chattanooga, TN. We all rendezvouzed and went to church together... had lunch afterward. Very nice day.

Last night and this morning I have been babysitting. Which brings me to today's blog question...

Are you a fan of romances with babies in them? I know we love babies in real life, but how do you feel about fictional bundles of joy??

I'm curious to hear your answers. I'll weigh in later this evening with my take on the subject!

Hope everyone had a pleasant Monday with a minimum of the usual Monday stuff.

Talk to you soon.

What would you do?

His Royal Love-Child was chosen by the host at eHarlequin for her "Read with the Hosty" book discussion this month. And I've been having a lot of fun talking about it with readers. Adhering to the motto that "immitation is the sincerest form of flattery", I am shamelessly borrowing a couple of her question ideas for you all because we're pretty much done discussing them on the board.

You don't have to have read the book to answer, because it's not about what my heroine did, but what *you* would do in her situation.

In the beginning of their relationship, Danette and Marcello keep it a secret for several reasons, many of which are Danette's. She doesn't want her co-workers to know she's the boss's lover in case they see her differently. She's an intensely private person and hiding her relationship from prying eyes comes naturally. And it excites her at first to have a secret like that from everyone else. But a time comes when it's not okay with her to keep the relationship a secret any longer. My question for you is...could you ever be in a secret relationship, have you ever fantasized about that kind of thing? Or would you hate the need to pretend indifference in front of others?

Okay, second question...Danette's friend (not knowing she's in a relationship and believing she needs to date rather than work all the time) ambushes her with a date at a dinner that's supposed to be just the two of them. Dee's question was: has this ever happened to you? What would you do if it did? Would you leave, letting the guy know you hadn't agreed to the date, or keep the pretense up and let him down gently at the end of the evening? How would you respond to your friend? Would you laugh it off, be angry, a little annoyed, or something else?

I'm really looking forward to hearing what you all have to say as I have a feeling you can get a lot more creative than my heroine. :)

Hugs,
Lucy

Names

I'm not a good name person. Other writers can come up with names for heroes and heroines. People even name their children after these fictitious characters.

Writers are creative, but yet I have the hardest time coming up with names. I think it's an inherited trait. My full name is Karen Sue. Is that not the dullest name? Even worse, my mother once wrote on my picture "Little" Karen Sue. It's her fault I'm overweight. She jinxed me.

My husband's name is Karl. For our firstborn we stuck an 'a' on the end of it and she became Karla. Whoa, that took a lot of thinking. My father's name is Bill so for our second child we stuck a 'y' on the end of his name and our son became Billy.

We had gotten pretty good at this but when we looked around at other names in our family we couldn't come up with anything we could live with. My mother was Laverne--Laverney? I don't think so. There was an Aunt Wilifred but Wilifredy nor Wilifreda held any appeal. Karl's father's name is Alonso. Alonsoy? Alonsa? Where the hell did Karl's grandmother even come up with a name like that? After a couple of hours of pushing our brains to the limit, Karl and I decided two children were plenty.

When I started my current work in progress I couldn't come up with the hero or heroines names so I took a break. Karl was getting ready for work and I can't get a thing accomplished when he's stomping around the house like a herd of elephants. So I'm watching the morning news when a car commercial came on for Kia. About that time Karl comes into the living room with a bit of toilet paper stuck on his face. I asked what happened and he said he nicked himself. Now, the way I figure it the less brain I have to use the more I'll have when I get older. Karl left for work and I went to my study to begin Kia and Nick's story.

Any of you have a good name story? Or were you named after anyone? Any story is fine.

Karen Kelley

What Happens in Ohio Stays in Ohio!

Well, shoot... if that were true, I couldn't tell you any good tales about the wonderful second annual Reader/Author Get-Together sponsored by our own Dianne Castell and Lori Foster. Who would have believed that last year's great event could get even better!! I had so much fun seeing friends I met last year and getting to know new friends from this year.

Being all together in one big room with a whole day and a half to bond and be silly was a hoot. From the games to the baskets to the book swap to the book sale and autographing... there was never a dull moment. But there was also plenty of time to relax and chill and just enjoy being with people who LOVE books. :) I'm always disappointed when I look at my pictures, because I never seem to capture all the people I wanted to see. Somehow I missed getting a photo of Cindy Hwang, our visiting editor. I had a cute picture of Joni and her sweet hubby, but it was so blurry I had to delete it. (Possibly because it was so dark in the cowboy bar and the flash stayed on too long.) And some moments were impossible to capture on still film... a video would have been much more entertaining. Can we say Cheryl (Christy's mom) doing a hoochy coochy dance???

Lori's son Mason and his son Lucas were there early Friday, but I didn't get a picture of them either. Sigh... I'm telling all you Scamps and Vamps right now, grab that 2007 calendar and put the second weekend in June down in red ink. Be there! I'm including the Scamps and Vamps group photo in this post, but hopefully by tomorrow morning or later this evening, I will have several photos posted in the photo album on my website www.janicemaynard.com.

Hugs to everyone who was there this weekend, and an extra hug to all those of you who wanted to be and couldn't. We knew you were with us in spirit, and we were all eager to get back to our computers at home, and get back in touch with our many wonderful online friends. A big thank you to all the volunteers who worked so hard this weekend, and a super big thanks to Lori and Dianne who were (quite simply) Superwomen!! Great job and woo! hoo! for more fun next year. Kate Angell Interview

Howdy all!
We have an interview with author Kate Angell. Her newest release, Squeeze Play, is out this month. She's a terrific writer and a wonderful person and she's my and Shi's agent! We are so very lucky to have her in our lives.
Enjoy!
Dianne

Jennifer - If Squeeze Play was made into a movie, I'd love to see Matthew Fox from LOST play center fielder Risk Kincaid and Heather Locklear play coffee shop owner, Jacy Grayson. They are a bit older than my characters. Yet have 'the look' that I'd imagined when creating the two. If I was to date a Richmond Rogue, it would be Cody 'Psycho' McMillan, coming up in my next book Curveball. He's wild, fun. and daring. A true bad boy.

Stacy - Twenty years ago, I tried my hand at writing for New York. It took me that many years to get published. In the early stages of writing, I tried category, romantic suspense, historicals, futuristics, but nothing sold. I then played with romantic comedy, and Calder's Rose was released in 2002. I doubt I'll ever write anything dark or edgy. I love a lighter tone to a story, a book that makes a reader smile or laugh.

Writers shouldn't write for trends. It's a waste of time and energy. By the time a writer would finish a book, the trend could be long gone. I believe an author should write the book of her heart...and make it marketable. You can write a tried-and-true plot, yet give it your own unique twist. Push the envelope. I read a lot of erotica. I love sexy stories.

I've been an agent for twelve years. I was an aspiring author long before that. I knew many of the authors I presently represent today when we were all trying to get a New York contract. I believe I'm good at what I do simply because I'm very empathetic. Being an author as well as an agent, I oftentimes feel worse than my writer when she gets a decline from an editor. I take each rejection very personally. What frustrates me a bit when reading submissions, is coming across a promising story line, yet the writing has no punch. Lots of passive verbs. It reads like vanilla ice cream and I'd like to add some sprinkles.
I love baseball, and follow both the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees.

Emma - If I could write a cameo-role for myself in one of my books, I'd own a sports bar where the athletes hung out after a game and in-between road trips. A place with class, yet casual enough to relax. This cameo role could run through all the books. Most definitely I'd have a love interest!

Judy - I designed the cover for Squeeze Play. It was very visual to me from the onset of the book. I had a friend who does graphic design put it together for me, and Dorchester thought it worked perfectly. Baseball is my favorite sport. I took a chance in proposing the trilogy to Alicia Condon, my editor. At this time, I don't think there's another author writing about the Boys of Summer. I wanted to break in with something new.

1.) Of your books that you have published, which is your favorite and why? Every book I've written sticks with me after I've typed 'The End'. It takes me eight to nine months to produce a book. That's a long time to be at the same setting and live with the same characters. I tend to bond with my books. Squeeze Play was truly fun to write. I love summer, baseball, and romance. Risk Kincaid was a very Alpha hero. I took the Most Valuable Player of the World Series and returned him to his hometown of Frostproof, Florida. The most important person in his life was coffee shop owner, Jacy Grayson. I went with the contrast of the major league player and the small town girl. They had a history, and by the end of the book, a future together as well.

Dianne - I'm single and have an animal house. Twelve dogs and six cats. I live on three acres, fenced in, so the dogs have lots of room to run. All the dogs came to me abandoned or abused. I couldn't turn them away. A female cat wandered in my driveway years ago, skinny and starving. I took her in. Two months later she had five kittens. All stayed. I live in a stilt house, so the dogs live upstairs, and the cats also live inside, within the latticework lower level. Between treats, toys, and doggy beds, my pet food grocery bill is probably as high as a household with eight growing boys! We're a very happy family.

If you've read Squeeze Play, go to my website - www.kateangell.com - and enter the contest to win a Barnes and Noble gift certificate.

Thanks, Kate Angell!

Will you let me now...

;o) post the cover that is...

It did, it did!

Blogger has been acting screwy all day...or at least it has with me. Anyway, as promised, the cover for Erin's upcoming release.

For those who missed the announcement, Erin McCarthy is joining us.

Welcome again, Erin!

Thursday, June 01, 2006

Say hello to....

We have a new member! Erin McCarthy is joining us. Welcome to Vamps and Scamps, Erin. Stupid Blogger isn't letting me load Erin's cover, but I'll try again later today.

Also... *G* I'm taking the lazy way out of blogging today. Instead of actually trying to use brain cells to think of a post, I'm just going use Erin's joining the group as my blog topic. You can check out Erin's site here. And since everybody knows that authors love to answer questions... *G* I asked Erin a couple of questions.

1)How did you get started writing?

Way back in the day, I actually won a writing contest in first grade (it was a paranormal ) and I was send to a regional competition at a huge high school (it was a school with carpet! Clearly the big leagues) and they read my book in front of an audience and gave me a nifty ribbon. I was hooked. I never really stopped writing, and got serious about it when I was at home with my kids.

2)What's your latest release about?

I have a novella out in BAD BOYS OF SUMMER, with Lori Foster and Amy Garvey, and that rounds out my four bowling friends. Then in August, my first vampire book is out, HIGH STAKES. Las Vegas. A vampire in politics. A woman who knows karate and isn't afraid to use it. Lots of fun. ;-)

3)Ever get frustrated with writing? What do you do? Somebody at RTB mentioned throwing the characters to the lions...

What's frustrating for me is that if the writing isn't going well, I know it's my fault. It means I've screwed up the story somewhere. And I hate that. So I step away, whine, talk incessantly about my characters to anyone who will listen. My husband is good for this because a lot of times he'll suggest something so ridiculous that it forces me to defend my story, and in the process I find the key I was looking for. This process lasts a day. If it lasts longer than that, I shut up, sit down, and write until I figure it out.

4)Want to tell us what is in progress now?

High Stakes (August) launches my vampire trilogy- which may be more than three if readers like them- and in 2007 my first dark paranormal book will be out. No title yet, but it's set in Louisiana and features an immortal hero, Damien du Bourg, who is a demon servant. This is a departure from what I usually write and I am having so much fun doing it. I think I'm been suppressing my dark side, and in this one, I let a little of it out to play.

*****

Erin, thanks so much for giving me an easy out of blogging today... I had an idea written down somewhere and I lost it.

Make Me Swoon!

At one of the luncheons at the Romantic Times convention the guest speakers were with a production company. We took a survey asking us what we'd like to see on DVD's. They showed pictures of possible leading men. I did think it odd they didn't show leading women. I think if you didn't have a strong leading woman the movie would fall flat.

So what book would you choose? The Wolf and the Dove, Shanna, Whitney My Love, Johanna Lyndsey's Mallory series are some of my fav historicals. Contemporaries would probably be Jake by Sharon Sala, Sandra Brown just about anything, Iris Johannson's The Ugly Duckling and any of her historicals and of course any book by the scamops and vamps authors!

What about the racier books that are out right now? They could heat up my screen any day!!! Yep, I would definitely have a lifetime subscription.

So what book would you like to see made into a movie?

In Other News: My may contest is about to end but look for my next one starting June first to celebrate the release of Hell On Wheels. W00-Hoooooo!!!!! I'll be giving away a sterling silver and diamond bracelet but you have to be a member of my newsletter group for this one. You can find all the info at my website (url in my sig line).
Best Wishes!

More RT Pictures

The first pic is the Aussie party...Australian booksellers. We were invited as they sell a ton on Bravas in Australia. Kathryn Falk, owner of RT, is in the orange dress. Notice how everyone has on a Texas Bad Boy pink hat! Kathryn wore hers for two days. :-) Go, Kathryn!

The second pic is Lori Foster and Karen Kelley at the Aussi party.

The third is LuAnn at the fairy ball. She looked lovely! Even did a spell but, alas, Toby Keith did not appear. :-)

The 4th pic is Lori and me doing a radio interview at WROD Daytona. The guy is Tony Welch. We had a great time.

The fifth pic is Billie Jo at the fairy ball. What a great outfit. She's bringing it to the June get-together. More fun pics! Wait till I put a pink cowboy hat on her head.

The last pic is Rosemary...my dear roomie, showing what it feels like to be at RT...Dead! We had 14 huge boxes in our room filled with promo stuff. We could not walk between our beds. Next year we're talking two suits and having parties etc. If you can make it to Houston we'd looove to see you.

Interview with the Fabulous JoAnn Ross

She really is fabulous. JoAnn Ross is one of my very favorite people, not to mention a fantastically talented and prolific author. I was so happy when she agreed to do a blog interview for us and I agree with her...readers on the Scamps, Vamps & Spicy Romance loop asked a ton of wonderful qeustions, but I think JoAnn selected some really great ones to answer.

Without further ado...I give you...JoAnn Ross...

Wow, what a lot of great questions!! I want to stress that it was extremely difficult to choose, so my selection process was mostly random. Which pretty much describes everything about my writing. :)

1) Is Emma Quinlan's friend Roxi from Cajun Heat getting her own story? Or Bobby Jefferson from Blaze? ~ Judy F

I'm so glad you asked that, Judy! ::g:: Because it gives me a chance to tell you that Love Potion #9, my novella in the BAD BOYS SOUTHERN STYLE anthology, will be out the first of July. After Katrina blew away her shop, Roxi moved Hex Appeal to Savannah, another of my favorite cities. Emma and Gabriel also make an appearance. You can see the cover, read an excerpt, AND even watch a hot Bad Boys Southern Style video on my website at http://www.joannross.com/. As for Bobby, I haven't planned a story for him, however, I've learned never to say never!

2) Will there be anymore trilogies in the future? ~ Chad

Yes. But that's all I can say about it at this moment. ::g:: Oh, I can tell you that you just might be seeing more of Brendan, from my Irish trilogy and OUT OF THE STORM and BLAZE, and Father Mike, Joe's brother from OUT OF THE STORM. (Both men are harboring dark and dangerous secrets from their pasts.) Stay tuned.

3) One of the things I like about your books is the Louisiana bayous are the setting of many of your books and in fact many of them have been set in the fabulous city of New Orleans. Why the fascination with this location? Has Katrina had any affect on your writing and do you plan to set future books in these locations? ~ Barbara

New Orleans is fabulous, isn't it? Even now, with all its current challenges, it's still like no other city in America. I fell in love with it back in the early 90s when we spent Christmas there. After that first visit, we've gone back every chance we get, including many visits to the bayou country where the Callahan Brothers trilogy, and BAYOU BAD BOYS is set.

And yes, Katrina had quite an effect. I was well into a book set in the city when Katrina hit. We'd been down in the Mississippi Gulf area for a library fund-raiser the Saturday of that weekend when the storm began to turn. We made it back to TN Sunday night, and I was glued to the television all Labor Day, watching the tragic destruction. I kept going back and forth on what to do since my book centered around crooked cops, corrupt politicians, the mob running gambling/prostitution boats in the Gulf, a battle between good and bad voodoo and -- oops -- a huge hurricane hitting the city. By late Monday night I'd come up with a new romantic suspense set in Wyoming about a serial killer (the man who was once the boy raised by wolves), which became IMPULSE.

I'm now back to work on the New Orleans book -- and passing a good time with way sexy bad boy cop Nick Broussard -- which will be out in February or March of 2007. (It no longer has a hurricane.) The title on the excerpt in the back of IMPULSE is FALLEN, but I just received word last week that may change. I'll announce the new title on my website as soon as I know it myself. And wow, that ended up a long answer! LOL

4) Jo Ann, if you could meet any of the characters in one of your books, who would you want to meet? (and why?) ~ Erin the Innocent

Hey, Erin -- One of my favorite heroines, of FAIR HAVEN, has the same name as you! As for meeting my characters. . . Wait! You mean they're not real? Then who are all those people who've been hanging around my house for the past 23 years? ;)

5) How much research do you do? Patti

Tons. I changed majors five times in college, so each time I start a book, it's like having someone actually pay me to change majors again. Remember, in Tootsie, where Dustin Hoffman tells his agent that he's not merely any tomato, he's a BEEFSTEAK tomato? We'll that's how I write; I'm sort of a "method" writer who has to be inside every character's skin in order to write them. (Which, since I've had serial killer books due December 30th two years in a row, has made for some rather strange Christmas seasons! Even my dogs started acting edgy around me while I was writing the Flamemaster's death row scenes in BLAZE.) Anyway, working this way means that I eat what they eat, listen to the music they listen to, and pretty much need to know everything they know. I read approximately 25 books on fire fighting and arson investigation for BLAZE, and even passed a written sample certification test.

6) What is the most fascinating thing you've learned about the writing process, and/or the most fascinating thing during your research for one of your stories? ~ Stacy

The most fascinating thing, to me, about the writing process is that twenty-three years and ninety-six books later, I still have no idea how I do it. I only know that some days it works. And others, like a baseball pitcher who loses his mechanics and doesn't have the foggiest idea why, it doesn't. Fortunately there have been more good days than bad.

Thanks for inviting me, Lucy, darlin'. I only wish we'd had room to answer everyone. These were all truly great questions!

It's almost summer!

Without a doubt, summer is my favorite season. Baseball, swimming, grilling.... and I love going barefooted. The top in my little VW Bug will stay down until the temperature dips below sixty. The lawns are green and the flowers are in bloom. On Friday nights my husband and I drive down to the Ohio River where we dine outside at a tiny marina that serves a delicious fish sandwich and has a live band.

My question to you is: what is your favorite summer activity? Reading by the pool? Playing corn hole or volleyball in your backyard? Going to the beach? Fishing? You tell me ;-)

I have a summer time prize package for one of the bloggers.... I'll pick randomly from the summer activity suggestions.

RT, Daytona, and the Scamps - Part 4

Now it's Saturday... no breakfast mixer this morning. Do we "sleep in"? No - not us! Instead, we're up bright and early for an al fresco meal on the pleasant terrace overlooking the ocean. Five Scamps plus Lori and Susan Stephens met with the Australian booksellers for a fun and interesting meal. Heck - I could just sit and listen to those "Down Under" gals talk with that cool accent. :)

The next part of the day was a lesson in endurance - a 4 1/2 hour booksigning!! An enormous room with 100+ authors. Controlled bedlam... Afterwards Lori and Dianne packed up and headed for the airport. Rosemary went into hibernation, and LuAnn, Karen, Susan, and I went in search of food, since we hadn't had lunch! Back to the hotel as quickly as possible to get a seat for the Mr. Romance cover model competition. Nothing like a little eye candy! It was a great show, and the winner gets to be on the cover of an upcoming Harlequin novel. Kate Duffy of Kensington Publishing and Abby Zidle of Harlequin HQN were two of the judges.

After the "pageant", it was off to another reception and then on to the Dorchester Publishing Racin' Rock and Roll party. Racing decorations, good dance music, and pizza and popcorn made for a fun and informal evening. I gave up about 10:45 to go back to the room and pack. It was no easy task to get all our "loot" organized. Lights out at midnight, up early Sunday morning, and off to the airport at nine. A great first RT experience and a fun and productive week. Now I'm off to unpack and get back in the routine. 'Til next year!

RT, Daytona, and the Scamps - Part 3

We've made it to Friday - are you tired yet??? Lots of stamina required!! Friday morning's breakfast mixer was sponsored by Kensington Publishing. Free books, door prizes, and meeting authors. Lori, Dianne, Rosemary, and Karen signed books and chatted with readers and booksellers. One wall of the room was glass and opened onto the terrace overlooking the ocean. Really nice ambiance.

Several of us went to another breakfast afterwards since the authors hadn't had a chance to eat. Later in the morning we visited the jam-packed goody "hallway" and dropped by Club RT to enter for some of the fabulous gift baskets. At noon we all gathered for the RT Awards. Our own Ms. Lori Foster won the prestigious Career Achievement Award for Contemporary Romance. She wore a beautiful silky black dress with tiny polka dots topped with a pretty crocheted black sweater. Her acceptance speech was sincere and polished and just the right length, and she came back to the table holding this cool trophy like an Oscar. :) I snapped the photo in this blog just as Dianne and Lori were heading for the airport, so she was wearing her "comfy" clothes.

Friday afternoon I had some new professional photos made. My hubby has been nagging me to get some new ones done. I hate being photographed, but I was okay with how they turned out. Friday at six we went to a reception hosted by eight Avon authors. More free books and autographs and cute finger food. Then on to the Faery Ball, Dinner, Dance, and Costume Competition. LuAnn dressed up every evening, as did Billlie Jo and her sister Yvonne, and Danny (from Germany) They looked great! I have tons of pictures, so I'll try to post some on my site as I get a chance. Stay tuned for Part 4.

RT, Daytona, and the Scamps - Part 2

When I left you... we were getting ready to attend the Wednesday party at RT. Elloras Cave provided fun table favors. We had cool "glasses" (drinking - not eye) with some kind of battery in the base that made them flash colored lights. They looked really nifty in the big semi-dark room. We also got free calendars and goody bags. The food was strawberries and pound cake with melted chocolate. Yum! The Elloras Cave "guys" wandered around the room making friends and giving many woman a "sigh". :) LuAnn and I couldn't resist getting a photo with a couple of them! We didn't stay 'til the bitter end. After all, we girls need our beauty sleep.

Thursday morning began with a breakfast hosted by Mary Janice Davidson. Afterwards, Karen Kelley and I walked on the beach. The weather was beautiful, and my only complaint was not having enough time to enjoy the lovely setting. I did, however, take a few minutes to watch the Mr. Romance cover model contestants play beach volleyball. They were gorgeous, but as LuAnn pointed out, not all of them were athletes. Ha! But who cares if they couldn't hit a volleyball??? Another luncheon, and then LuAnn and I tried to get a brief nap. Afterwards we went to a "fun" workshop hosted by Kayla Perrin and Tina Wainscott. They quizzed all the cover model contestants with funny and naughty questions. Another brief reception after that and then Heather Graham's Caribbean Pirate dinner and dance. Check back for installment number 3!

RT, Daytona, and the Scamps - Part 1

Hey, guys! I'm back from five days of business, fun, business, and more fun in Daytona Beach. The 23rd annual Romantic Times Booklovers Convention was an amazing and exhausting experience. This was my first time to attend, and I was very impressed with all the planning that goes into such a huge event. I'll give you the highlights, and if I'm lucky... I'll show you some pictures as well.

I flew in on Tuesday afternoon... hit a snag right off the bat. LuAnn and I were supposed to be roomies, but the Hilton booked us in separate rooms. We both stayed up until 11PM waiting for the other one to arrive. Sigh... We didn't figure it out until the next morning, and then I had to move rooms, because the one they gave LuAnn had an ocean view and mine overlooked the heating and air units. :(

The only event Tuesday evening was an informal "luau"... it was supposed to be outdoors on a terrace overlooking the ocean, but rain forced the event inside. (The only rain all week, though.) The room where they set things up was too small for the crowd, so I grabbed a bit of food and stayed just an hour or so. Vegged in my room after that.

Wednesday morning after I moved rooms I met with nine other authors from the Georgia Romance Writers to "stuff" goody bags. We hosted an ice cream social for booksellers later that day. At 11 I went to a workshop. At noon LuAnn and I attended the "Salute to Waldenbooks" luncheon, and then at 4 I did a workshop with Lori and Dianne. Bookseller event from 5 to 6 and then dinner with Dianne, Rosemary, Karen, and Susan Stephens (a delightful Brit who writes for Harlequin Presents). The evening wrapped up with the Ellora's Cave fantasy party from 9 to midnight. (More about that later in the next installment.)

Ways to Waste a Day

So I have 26 days to go before I'm going to be indisposed for a little.

I have about 12 days to go to meet yet another personal deadline that I set in preparation for the two week period, roughly, when I'm not going to be writing. And I'm only about 1/3 of the way there.

Is that motivating me at all to go get some work done?

Uhhhhh.... nope.

Here's suggestions on how to waste a perfectly good writing day.... or any day when you're putting off what you need to get done.

1) Check your email. Often. You never know, maybe the editor sent you the artwork for the book that is due out in less than a year. Or the editor has spoken to the agent and has decided to buy the two proposals you sent in. So you just never know.

2) Rearrange all the books on your book shelf. Not that they are going to be any easier to find, since you can't remember your organization system anyway.

3) Blog hop. Visiting your favorite blogs can easily kill two, three, four hours. Of course, it tends to make my back sore, sitting still so long, but hey...

4) Flip through the TV channels and ask nobody in particular why there is NOTHING on, when you have more than 300 channels. How is that possible, by the way?

5) Go to get laptop out...and decide you really need to do something online. Doesn't matter what, just something to avoid sitting down and working.

6) Flip through the list of names you compiled for cleaning services. Hey, getting my house cleaned IS important. And I have to get estimates, right?

7) Go outside and water the grass. Check the lilies to see if any more bloomed since three hours ago.

8) Take a nap. Now I'm not really tired, but I like naps.

9) Sit down to work on WIP, and realize that you are hungry. It's not like that piece of chocolate actually counted as breakfast, right?

10) Finally sit down to try working, one more time, and realize that after procrastinating half the day away, you really are tired. And you really do need that nap this time.

So there are a few days to waste an entire day. Now I need to go check my email... again...

Reader Interview with Lora Leigh

And the next interview we have is Lora Leigh. Lora writes seriously hot, erotic romance. Contemporary, paranormal, fantasy... I think she suffers that same short attention span thing I have a problem with.

Her current release is a paranormal, Megan's Mark. This is a Breed book~the Breeds are genetically altered men and women. You can read more about them at her website.

Now, on to the interview....FYI, if you just stumbled across the blog, the interview questions are from readers of the Scamps loop. We have more authors on the schedule for interview so if you want join in... send an email to

ScampsVampsandSpicyRomance-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Or just visit the group on the web and sign up there.

1) From Pam K

I know you love to fish what is the biggest fish you've ever caught. That one is for my hubby. BTW He loves that I read your books. He says they have excellent fringe benefits for him rofl.

Lora~a 15 inch catfish that the hubby wouldn't let me keep to eat. I love catfish.

2) From Lisa

If you could as your readers one question what would it be?

Lora~What were you thinking five seconds after you had sex the first time. LOL

3) From Christy

I'm not sure how to ask this question but how excited were you to see your first breed book that wasn't ebook published or in an anthology?

Lora~I was amazed. Excited. And terrified at the same time. Amazed that I was finally in print by a major NY publisher. Excited to see all the book stores the book was in at once. And terrified that no one would buy it. LOL. The emotions I felt were confusing and uncertain in a lot of ways. Its a big step I think for any writer. That first book released from a major publisher. The anticipation and the fears are really intense.

4) From Lucy

I'm SO glad you are writing Dawn's story and Tanner's story, but will you be writing Hawke's story? And if yes...um...when? :) I know I'm a baby, but I'm dying to find out what happens to him and his mate (Jessica) facing death.

Lora~Yes, Hawkes story is coming very soon I hope. I'm trying right now to get the time line in order between the original feline, the wolves and the NY Breeds. So definitely be expecting more coming soon.

*Note from Shi...FYI~I checked with Lora... the NY Breeds...these are the Breeds that are being written for Berkley Publishing.

5)From Jenny

If you can trade places with anyone for a day, who would you pick and why?

Lora~That's a hard one, because I don't think I want to trade places with anyone. LOL. I've kind of settled into who I am, and I'm enjoying the adventures that life brings me with my husband, my children and my writing. Trade lives with someone else, and I have to trade that part as well. I wouldn't trade that part of me for anything.

Momisms…

Today is Mother’s Day and even though my mother is gone for almost thirty years now I can still hear her little pearls of wisdom echoing in my brain when the occasion arises. Like when I really really want those new shoes that I don’t exactly need I can hear her whispering in my ear...Any Damn Fool Can Spend Money.
Is that a great way to raise kids or what!
Or other times when I’m shopping (do you see a pattern here?? Shopping!) I think, gee this new purse only costs ten bucks. I can afford ten buck. Then I hear Irma (my mother’s name) say...Take Care Of The Pennies And The Dollars Will Take Care of Themselves.
Then there’s another favorite. When I wouldn’t finish my dinner I’d get...If You Don’t Eat It Today You’ll Get It Again Tomorrow. If I spent too much time reading I’d get...Go Outside And Get The Stink Blowed Off. (lovely!) And the best one of all is...Because I’m the mom and I said so.
I’d like to think I did better by my kids but, alas, nope. If you’d just say to one of my kids Any Damn Fool... They will automatically fill in...Can Spend Money.
So, what are some of pearls of wisdom you mother imparted to you that you can’t get out of your brain no matter how hard you try? Those little sayings that you swore on leftover peas you’d never say to your own kids and did anyway??
Time to fess up!

Surprises...life is filled with 'em...

My mind is a little fragmented lately, so don't expect much in the way of cohesion from this blog. :) I've just been thinking a lot obout surprises lately. Life really is filled with 'em. And they come from the most unexpected sources. Hence the suprise element...I guess. LOL

Here's the thing...when I started writing AND ABLE, I had no idea I would meet a character who would spin off my next Brava series. But the minute Ethan Crane came on screen, I *knew* I was going to write his story.

Then there's the not so good surprises when some readers dislike something I particularly love about a book. Or when another author leaves a dangler in an epilogue that puts the HEA in question for me.

But then there are more good surprises, like hearing my teenage son down in the kitchen after bedtime only to discover he couldn't sleep...so HE'S DOING THE DISHES. I guess that goes under GREAT surprises. LOL

Or when I find out my books have been released electronically only because they hit a best sellers list. I needed that surprise right at that minute. The phone call that told me Mom was in the hospital again wasn't such a welcome surprise, but it goes hand in hand with each day I wake up and know she's still in my lift. If we listened to her doctors, each of those days would be a surprise. ;-)

My best surprise would probably be the day I realized my husband loved me as much as I loved him. I didn't think it was possible, but every day since has been a gift.

So, what about you? Have you been surprised lately? In a good way? A not so good way, or something in between? Or maybe you've got a moment in your memory that will always live as one of your best surprises and you'd like to share that...I'd love to hear!

Hugs,
Lucy

When it's good...

Lately, I've been in a reading funk. I find plenty of books that sound good but I just can't work up the interest to read them. Although I do find the interest to buy them. My TBR stack has turned into a skyscraper.

But I'm trying to get myself back into reading. It does recharge the mental batteries and I need all the help I can get.

It really helped that one of the books I picked up to help myself get defunked was this one. Seraphim by Shelby Reed. Awesome. Plain and simple.

Now I've had it on ebook since it came out, but lately, I don't want to stare at the computer screen, or my pocket PC when I'm reading. So I just never got around to reading it. Then I got the print version. This was what I picked up the night I decided I had to start reading again.

It's a pretty long book for a tradesize paperback, about 350 something pages, I think. Stupid me, I started reading it at like 9pm. When 11:30 rolls around and my eyes started to close on me, I had to set it aside until the next morning. As soon as I dropped kidlets off at their various schools, I devoured the rest of it. I love it when a book grabs onto me and doesn't let go.

Seraphim is a paranormal romance about warrior angels, old evils...love. Some tear jerking moments and some excellent action. It is an erotic romance~but it's not as hmmm...risque as some others. Actually an excellent book to try if you're kind of curious about erotic romance. I'll even link you to an excerpt.

Shelby did an excellent job with the book, and I think it helped bring me out of my reading funk a little. There's several books in my TBR skyscraper that seem to be calling my name and since I beat my deadline, I think I can breathe enough to enjoy them.

Any of you all been in a reading funk? What's brought you out?

A Thundering Boom!

It's thundering and lightning here! Not a good time to be working at the computer but it did make me wonder how everyone feels about storms. Does a boom of thunder unleash your inner vixen? LOL

I love storms as long as they don't get too hairy. Usually, I'll move to my laptop to write. I think there's a lot to be said for setting the mood, though. When I write, I usually have fragrant candles or incense going. Definitely music. I always write better if I meditate before I start writing--connect with my characters, so to speak. I concentrate on them when I meditate.

If you're a writer, do you just jump in and start writing? Do you read what you wrote the day before? Or do you just plow right in.

If you're a reader, do you read anywhere and everywhere? Or do you have a favorite place to curl up with a good book. What is the strangest/oddest place you've ever read a book? I'm not sure about the oddest place, but my favorite one is curled up on the sofa with soft lighting---no overheads, though, candles are okay.

So, tell me how you read or write---whatever you read or write.
Happy Reading,
Karen Kelley
