A FATE WORSE THAN DEATH...
Which one is the most painful... having a root canal or shopping for a new bathing suit??? Okay, maybe it's not a fate worse than death, but most women I know HATE the ritual of trying on potential swimsuits, especially in front of those awful flourescent dressing room lights! The Today Show has done two segments in two weeks about choosing the correct suit for your body type, so clearly, I am not the only one bemoaning this esteem-shriveling activity! I haven't had a new bathing suit in about six years. The one buried in my bottom drawer is still good, but I decided to bite the bullet this year. I am going to be in Florida twice in May, once for a wedding and once for the Romantic Times convention. So... I've ordered a new suit from L. L. Bean. It's one of those where you can mix and match the style of top and bottom you want. It hasn't come yet, but I'll let you know what I think when it arrives. And to make the whole situation worse... I have pale, untanned skin. Eek. Whoever said that tanned fat looks better than pasty white fat was right. Unfortunately, even before all the educational stuff about the dangers of skin cancer, I was never able to tan. After some bad burns as a preteen, I pretty much gave up on the whole beach bunny thing. But I am here to announce some amazing news... I have discovered a wonder product. Really... all kidding aside. I have tried several self-tanners over the years from the cheap stuff to the more expensive products like Clinique. Some work better than others, but you always have to worry about streaking and blotching. And sometimes you come out looking more like the great pumpkin than a sleek, golden brown goddess. But all that has changed (well - at least the color part... the shape thing is another story!). :) I heard about a product that many women are snapping up like the latest Scamps and Vamps novel... it's called "Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer". It comes in three shades (I use the "fair", of course), and I'm not kidding when I say that some stores are having trouble keeping it in stock. You simply put it on after your shower or bath just like you would any other lotion. There is no streaking or blotching, and gradually, you get a great tan. The tube said that after seven nights you would see the results, but even after two, I could tell a difference. My two "twenty-something" daughters were amazed and envious of the natural-looking tan on my legs. They both went out and bought some ASAP. I swear I don't own stock in Jergens, but something this good has to be shared!! Stayed tuned for the next segment of "A Fate Worse Than Death" when you will see a photograph of me in my new L. L. Bean swimsuit....NOT! If you are involved in the Amazing Swimsuit Shopping Race this year - good luck and happy hunting!!

I hate swimsuit shopping, and after doing the trying on and standing this way and that way and looking in the mirror at home here, I have come to the conclusion that my neat one piece black suit will still do nicely.
I do not tan well, and will have to try that lotion tip.
As for a root canal, I guess I am a bigger chicken about that than the swimsuit issue, because last year I had two teeth pulled rather than go through the expense of a root canals and capping of them. They are no bother now......
I don't mind swimsuit shopping, but then I have three suits with me at all times that are well over 10 years old, still in style and still fit me nicely (all one-piece by the way too)as I have a pear-shaped body and white, white skin. I have more trouble finding products that make me look like I don't spend most of my time inside than out.., so that Jergens product I'm definitely going to snatch up soon! So in essence to the above I'll have to say a root canal is much worse than shopping for a bathing suit as far as I'm concerned..LOL

Bathing suit?! Whats a bathing suit? I havent worn one in years. I'm not much of a water person either, but the few times I have gone shorts and a shirt work just fine for me!!

It's sad, I love to swim but haven't been in years because of my weight. I do like to go to the coast and I wear shorts and a T-shirt into the surf. LL Bean, hmmm. I'll check it out.
I burn easily, too. I'll try the Jergens.

i haven't ever had a root canal,so i can't say for certain. however, i have a deep seated fear of dentists.
i'll take the swimsuit, just not this year. Nooooooo swimming until the pregnant belly is gone. WHich might be in another year or two.
I hate trying on swimsuits! I hate dentists too. So, really it's a no win situation for me!
I'm trying to lose weight, but I'm not doing so good. I do feel better about myself since I'm going to the gym, but need to curb the junk food!
I had a root canal once and didn't feel a thing because the tooth was dead. The dentist used bleach to clean the tooth out and to this day, I can't stand the smell of bleach!
Oh I certainly can sympathize with you on the swimming issue Shi during pregnancy. I tried that once when I was 6 mos pregnant with my daughter, Leslie, and I could not float in the deep end..I sank..LOL

I haven't went shopping for a swimsuit in a long time. I usually wear shorts and a shirt when I go swimming. I saw the commerical for the lotion. I didn't know if it would work or not. I will have to get me some. Thanks for telling us how good it does work.
Seeing how I just came from the dentist a short while ago and yes, for the first time in years I have a cavity, I have to rate the dentist right up there with swimsuit shopping, which is sheer torture.
I hate the way fitting room mirrors make you look so terribly jiggly and lumpy - it has to be a cruel, cruel joke - I know I can't look that bad, not really . . . LOL
We discovered the Jergens lotion last summer and with three women in the house, went through quite a bit of it. I've noticed that this year they have a face formula out too.

I had this dilemma Nov '04 when I went on my cruise. Yeah, that's a really stupid time to be looking for a swimsuit, but I found a place in the mall. I'm a pear, too, so it's not easy finding a flattering suit.
I'll admit to being a bit of a sun worshipper. I actually get ready for summer by going to the tanning salon, then once I get a bit of color, let Mother Nature take over.
I might have to check into the facial glow moisturizer stuff cuz my face only burns (I have a very weird body...LOL) so when I'm at the tanning salon I turn the face tanner off. If it looks natural, I might just do the over stuff, too. Skin cancer is so not the way to go.
I love to go swimming but haven't been in years since the pounds have
added up. I have several bathing suits too. I really should get one for the correct size. A girl at the bs is using that jergens stuff.
?? how do you do your back when one lives alone. LOL
Janice! Hi. Pasty skin and swimsuits. Which is worse. But, thanks for bringing the issues up. not.
Your group blog is really cool. I like the motto at the top. :)
Oh, Janice, thanks for the tan tip! I wondered about that.
Right now I'm a beached whale...with your help I'll be a tanned beached whale.
I got a new b-suit too. Not too bad, support, keeps my boobs off my knees. :-)

I hate shopping for a swimsuit. Hate it. There is no swimsuit that looks right on me, I've discovered this after years and years of being dreadfully disappointed. But, I'll go out this year and search, simply because I've gone too many years now with the same old one, and my daughters will disown me if I don't at least try and look presentable, lol.
as to the Jergens stuff. I just bought some of that!!! I've not had a chance to use it, but I'm so glad to hear its got a good, natural color to it. Thanks for letting us all know, Janice.--Tami
Thanks Janice for the tip about the lotion. I went and bought some today.
Well, ladies... I loved hearing all of your comments, and it makes me feel better to know I am not alone in facing this awful springtime rite of passage.
And P.S. to Judy - I haven't done my back with the lotion yet... just my arms and legs. I'd like to get some sun on my back the old fashioned way, but I'm pretty impatient about sun-bathing!
Ah... the things we do to look good...
P.S. to Michelle - thanks for dropping by!
