I need a hero...

Well, not really... but the kids have been on a Shrek binge and I've been forced to listen to the soundtrack for Shrek 2 like ten times in the past two days. Fortunately, it's a pretty decent soundtrack, but now I have that song stuck in my head...

So what's your favorite kind of hero? Funny, charming, upbeat... the kind who's drawn to protecting people...or maybe the dark, tortured one?

Me... it's not so much the tortured hero, although I do like them a little dark and broody. But I like them best when they are misunderstood.
Like Zarek from Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dance With the Devil. Or Dash from Lora Leigh's Elizabeth's Wolf. Granted, Dash had more of a problem misunderstanding himself than a lot of others did, but still... makes for a great 'angsty' plot.

Or... *G* one a lot of readers are looking forward to.... Rhage, from JR Ward's Lover Eternal. I got to read it early and Rhage is definitely one of my fave heroes. Even many of his brothers don't understand him completely and when your best friends don't see you clearly, well... again, more for a great plot with a lot of emotion.

Of course, my all time favorite hero isn't from a romance book~Duncan Reever from the Stardoc series by SL Viehl, also writes as Lynn Viehl. I couldn't make up my mind, even from book one, whether I hated him or loved him.

Of the characters I've written, I think some of my personal faves are Blue...from Once Upon A Midnight Blue. He turned out to be a more complex character than I expected, and he ended up taking over the story, even though techinically... he wasn't the hero. I like complex. And Joel, from His Every Desire, oh yeah, I think he was definitely a little misunderstood. A crook, a con artist...even a killer, but all for reasons.

So who are some of your fave heroes and why?

I don't have a specific favorite (at least not one that I can think of right now). It is more of a type of hero (or several types actually). I like the funny and charming guys, but I also like the dark and brooding type. Not to mention the smart and witty ones and the ones that are kind to kids and animals (LOL). Also, there are the men in kilts, rakes, and cowboys. I am not so big on the domineering and controlling heroes though. If he is too much of a jerk or too arrogant then forget it.

I guess it all depends on my mood what type of hero I like the most. Sometimes it's the nerd, sometimes it's the cowboy or rake. As long as the character is well-written and believable, then I'll usually like him.

I would have to agree with Jana. Picking one is tough. I like the protective ones -- they get my toes to curling.
And there is just something about bad boys...ooohhboyyyy! But there are so many flavors to choose from. :)

I agree with Jennifer...depends on my mood. Years ago I used to love the pirate heroes... I'll have to think on this one :-)

What about Bram from Luring Lucy? YUM! And I can remember always liking Superman (Dean Cain). The kids tease my husband, calling him Mama's Superman.

But don't you think about heroism in a new light since 9-11?

I think my favorite heroes are smart and yet, like most people, just don't quite understand themselves. But they are willing to adapt when they discover something they thought was part of their integral nature isn't quite 100% true or isn't quite what they thought. Adaptation doesn't have to be smooth or quick but outright rejection of the new reality tends to turn me off.

I don't like ones that are jerks without redeeming qualities. I just want to kick them. Hard. Multiple Times.

And I don't like ones that have a mean or cruel streak.

This is an impossible question. I tried to make a list so I could pick my favorite, but I had about 25 and was only part way through my list. So I tried to see if there were similar characteristics in my choices and it seems I go for the alpha guys - protective, with a hint of vulnerability, and usually the author has done something to really make the character stand out from other heroes I've read about, ie: one was an alcoholic, another was illiterate. One had a tattoo I still fantasize about, and another had a chipped tooth that gave him a really sexy smile. If they are smart and funny and have a hint of bad boy, so much the better.

doesn't have to be one hero... looking for that certain kind, ladies.

the funny guy? The cop? the charmer? or the brooder....

I love the dark, dangerous, dissolute rake with hidden wounds and honor. I also like the brave, considerate and honorable knight/captain/cop who struggles between doing the right thing and giving in to his deepest desires.

I have to say that I prefer the protective, possesive type. Those alphas, the bad boys with a hint of vulnerability, most of them are just misunderstood. And Cowboys! You just have to love em! As long as they are sensitive and loyal they got me!

I want a man strong enough to take care of me, but smart enough to know I can do it myself.
And hot. Can I have hot?

And - you've been tagged, to commit a Random Act of Kindness. Pass it on!

I really like dark tortured heroes, who are pure Alphas

Definetly the Alpha male for me. Dark haired, blue eyed and self confident with that take charge attitude. Sarcastic sense of humor but when he loves he loves with all that he is. If he has a little something extra (senses, power, shapeshifter, vampire) all the better.

This is a really tough question. Heroes are a bit like chocolates to me...each kind can be absolutely delectable. However, whether light or dark, I need mine to have inner strength and confidence to do what must be done, to fight for what is right. And if they happen to have a sense of humor...*sigh*

Tough question, but here it goes.

I can't pinpoint why, but some of my favorite heroes are Zarek from SK's Dark Hunter series, Michael from JQ's "When He Was Wicked", Roarke from the JD Robb series, Bram from LF's "Luring Lucy" (thanx Lisa for mentioning him!), Jamie Creed from LF's visitation series, Athony from JQ's "The Viscount Who Loved Me", Joe AND Ranger from the Plum series, and about 100 others.

I think what these men have in common is that they are complex, with strong emotions and also a lot of confidence, which is very sexy. Not to make them sound weak, but I think there's also a vulnerability to them in the emotional sense - they care deeply yet show it in different ways. I think they all have had their bad boy moments so you feel like you are getting quite the deal with these heroes. There is just something about a man who has that wicked grin like he's up to something, or will be later, and he can't wait. I hope that answered the question.

It is hard to say which type of hero would do it for me, but I think that I tend to lean toward the ones that know what is right, but cross the line to discover and protect to the end.

They have to have that hidden quality that you want to kick them but at the same time cheer them on. I tend to lean toward tall, dark and rugged but kind under that gruff way of theirs.
